Diabetes Health Professional Awards 2009
The inaugural Diabetes Health Professionals Awards were presented to Victorian health professionals on Thursday 12 November 2009 at the Diabetes Australia – Vic (DA–Vic) World Diabetes Day celebration. Professor Trisha Dunning AM who is the inaugural Chair in Nursing at Deakin University and was appointed a Vice-President of IDF in 2009, made the presentations.
Lucien Deane Johns, a Dietitan and Credentialed Diabetes Educator from Alpine Health in Myrtleford received an award for Taking Control of Diabetes Group Self Management Program. The six session program designed for people who have been recently diagnosed with diabetes or who have sub optimal control of their condition is facilitated by allied health professionals and other health service providers in the Alpine Shire.
A course manual was developed for distribution to course participants and National Physical Activity and Dietary Guidelines were utilised in the development of the program and the manual. The program introduced self management principles, self selection of goals and skill development in the areas of overcoming hurdles and ongoing motivation. Links established with key health agencies and programs during the program added to the sustainability of learnings and adherence to good self management.
A special presentation was made to Jennifer Browne and Sharon Thorpe from the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) recognizing the work they had done with DA–Vic in the development of Feltman.
This new diabetes educational resource is a felt mat that can be either laid out on a flat surface or hung up, outlining the human body and those systems and organs relating to diabetes. Using the stick-on felt pieces, Aboriginal Health Workers can show their patients or community groups how insulin works in the body. Until now, that’s been a difficult concept to explain. Feltman comes with an instructional DVD and cards that can be used in relation to the management of diabetes or the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
