OZ DAFNE

OzDAFNE for Health Professionals

DAFNE stands for - Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating.

DAFNE is a five day self-management program designed for adults with type 1 diabetes. It is a way of managing type 1 diabetes by estimating insulin doses based on the carbohydrate content of meals. People who have been taught this approach have better blood glucose control, less illness (less time off work), fewer severe hypos and less chance of diabetes complications.

This approach has been used in Europe for over 20 years. In 1998 diabetes health professionals in the UK adapted the European course and called it DAFNE. DAFNE is now in Australia (OzDAFNE) to help people with type 1 diabetes better manage their condition. Over 600 people in Australia have completed the course and 21 diabetes centres have been trained to provide DAFNE.

What’s so different about DAFNE?

Many people already have multiple injections each day, but they match their food to their insulin. The difference with DAFNE is that individuals choose how much insulin to take on a day-to-day and meal-to-meal basis.

This means they can eat what they like and, more importantly, when they like.

DAFNE also gives people with type 1 diabetes the skills to manage things like exercise, illness and alcohol more safely.

Register for an OzDAFNE Support Day

Some participants find their own health and medical professionals are not familiar with the DAFNE principles, so do not get the support they need after completing the DAFNE course.

This is why we are conducting a series of DAFNE Support Days where health professionals can learn the principles of DAFNE to be better equipped to support their patients.

The objectives of the OzDAFNE Support Day are for participants to

  • Gain an understanding of the DAFNE dose adjustment principles
  • Understand the Carbohydrate Portion (CP) and how it is used in DAFNE
  • Know who could benefit from DAFNE and how to refer
  • Understand the OzDAFNE training and accreditation process
