With the rise in diabetes and the increasing complexity of management, health professionals need to keep abreast of the latest information, advances and technology.  Nurses and allied health professionals need to know how to manage their patients with confidence and according to the current evidence-based guidelines.

Our Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educators and Accredited Practising Dietitians provide a range of innovative programs for health professionals, with the latest information on diabetes, current management, patient-centred care and research.

2009 Health Professional program

Diabetes for practice nurses

This two day workshop is for nurses working in general practice and will help practice nurses to understand current guidelines for diabetes management, how to develop systems for diabetes management and improve outcomes at the individual and practice level.

GPV are offering practice nurses a 50 per cent subsidy of fees at the completion of this program.

Diabetes for practice nurses will also be held in Wangaratta, Echuca / Moama, Ballarat and Kilmore.  Please contact your local Division for information and registration for programs in these locations.

2 Day Diabetes Update in Geelong

This interactive program will open your eyes to the many issues involved in diabetes management.  The program is suitable for Division 1 & 2 nurses working in community and aged care settings, diabetes resource nurses in acute hospitals and nurses working in general practice.  The course is also relevant for allied health professionals such as dietitians, pharmacists and podiatrists.

Become a supermarket tour leader

We also coordinate supermarket tours for people with diabetes across Victoria. Tour leaders are dietitians supported and trained by DA-Vic.

If you are interested in conducting tours, we support you in the following ways:

  • Comprehensive leader's manual
  • Take bookings and confirm registrations
  • Provide participant show-bags
  • Promote tours in our member magazine and on our website

Diabetes for aged care workers and supported care

This is an interactive half day workshop for personal carers and Division 2 nurses working in aged care.

Topics covered:

  • What is diabetes?
  • Signs, symptoms and diagnosis
  • Food choices for older people with diabetes in care
  • Principles of blood glucose monitoring
  • Managing high and low blood glucose levels
  • Complications of diabetes

Dates: Wednesday 20 May or Wednesday 14 October

Fees: No charge

Carbohydrate counting workshop for health professionals

This half day workshop is designed to provide diabetes educators and dietitians with practical skills to enable them to identify the foods and fluids that contain carbohydrate, estimate the quantity of carbohydrate and apply this information to their patient education.

Dates: Thursday 25 June, Thursday 3 September, Thursday 26 November, 2009 
Time: 1pm - 4.30 pm

Annual Diabetes Health Professional Symposium

DA–Vic in partnership with Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, is again hosting this key educational event for diabetes nurse educators, dietitians and diabetes health professionals in 2009.
