National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)
What is the NDSS?
The NDSS aims to support people with diabetes to understand and manage their life with diabetes and to ensure they have timely, reliable and affordable access to the supplies and service they require to effectively self manage their condition.
The NDSS is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by Diabetes Australia. Diabetes Australia has administered the Scheme since 1987. We administer the scheme through out Victoria.
The NDSS is a program that provides blood and urine testing strips, syringes and needles for special injection systems at subsidised prices to people who register for its benefits.
Who is eligible to register for the NDSS?
People who are resident in Australia and have been diagnosed with diabetes by a medical practitioner, and who hold a current Australian Medicare card or Department Veteran Affairs file number, can be registered to access the benefits of the NDSS.
If you are a visitor to Australia, and from a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, you may be entitled to temporary registration to the NDSS.
Registration
To be eligible for NDSS subsidised products register on the scheme. This can be done by completing an NDSS Registration Form having the form signed by your medical doctor and returning your form to Diabetes Australia – Vic. Once the details on your form have been verified, an NDSS registration card will be issued to you.
An NDSS registration card will be sent to the new registrant’s address as soon as the registration process has been completed.
Privacy
We are committed to the National Privacy Principles as stated in the Privacy Act (1988). The information provided on the registration form will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any purpose other then that expressly stated on the form.
Free Syringes
We have successfully negotiated with the Victorian state government for them to cover the co-payment share of any needles or syringes purchased by NDSS registrants in Victoria. This effectively makes the needles and syringes “free” to eligible registrants in all states and territories.
