National Symposium for Social and Behavioural Research in Diabetes
In May 2009, Diabetes Australia-Vic and the International Public Health Unit at Monash University, invited academic and clinical leaders from around Australia to attend the inaugural national symposium on social and behavioural research in diabetes. The aim of the symposium was to explore what was currently happening in social and behavioural research in diabetes, to examine the evidence from the field both in Australia and internationally, and to identify the gaps and priorities for the future. Speakers were invited from the USA and Finland and five Australian states to present on the three key themes of prevention, management and innovative models for diabetes care. The meeting held in Melbourne was attended by fifty researchers, clinicians, policy makers and funders.
There was general agreement at the meeting for a multi-strategy approach to research and interventions which are targeted at individuals, the community and whole populations and include environmental, policy and systems approaches as well as behavioural programs.
The inaugural symposium was an initial step to establish priorities and a coordinated national approach to diabetes research.
DA-Vic is establishing the first Australian Centre for Social and Behavioural Research in Diabetes, with the appointment of the Professor/Director later this year.
