Diabetes Epidemic 10 Years On

2001 – 2011

The prevalence of diabetes in Victoria has increased dramatically over the last 10 years.

In 2001 there was 2% of the Victorian population diagnosed with diabetes but in 2011 this figure has more than doubled to 4.5%. 252,694 people in Victoria are now diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated that for every one of these there is another person who has the disease but does not know it yet.

In 2001 there was only one Local Government Area (LGA) considered a diabetes hotspot, but in 2011 this has risen to 64 hotspots. This is a dramatic increase of 63 hotspots in 10 years. An area is designated a hotspot when more than 4% of its population has either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Full diabetes data showing the changes from 2001 to 2011 in Victoria filtered by LGA, postcode and state electoral division is available on the new Diabetes Epidemic website

Join our campaign!

Are you concerned about the growing rates of diabetes in Victoria?

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented. Studies have shown that lifestyle modification involving healthy eating, physical activity and weight loss are effective at preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes in those at high risk.

We are asking all Victorians to get involved and send a letter to their local council urging them to make diabetes planning a priority. We want local councils to provide more physical activity opportunities including walking and cycling paths, sports facilities and access to public transport for all residents.

We’ve made it easy for you to join the campaign by providing a letter template and contact details for every local council. Click here to find out more about our campaign and how to send a letter.
