With the rise in diabetes and the increasing complexity of management, health professionals need to keep abreast of the latest information, advances and technology. Nurses and allied health professionals need to know how to manage their patients with confidence and according to the current evidence-based guidelines.

Our Credentialled Diabetes Nurse Educators and Accredited Practising Dietitians provide a range of innovative programs for health professionals, with the latest information on diabetes, current management, patient-centred care and research.

 Type 1 diabetes update

This new 2 day program is suitable for Division 1 RNs, GPs and Dietitians working in a variety of practice settings who need to have a thorough working knowledge of type 1 diabetes in order to care for patients safely and well.

 Diabetes in schools and early childhood settings

This seminar offers key staff in schools and early childhood settings the opportunity to expand their knowledge and become more confident in supporting and facilitating the day to day experience of young people with type 1 diabetes in their care. Sessions will include information about diabetes and diabetes management, and practical workshops covering a variety of specialised topics in more detail including monitoring, pumps, and camps.

We coordinate supermarket tours for people with diabetes across Victoria. Tour leaders are dietitians supported and trained by Diabetes Victoria. If you are interested in conducting tours, we support you in the following ways:

This is an interactive half day workshop for enrolled nurses and personal care attendants caring for people with diabetes in a variety of residential and support setings. Topics covered:

Carbohydrate counting workshops for dietitians and DNEs

This half day workshop  is designed to provide dietitians and diabetes educators with practical skills in estimating the quantity of carbohydrate in various foods and applying this information to their client education. Practical exercises will include calculating carbohydrate in cooked and raw foods using a variety of techniques including food models and the analysis of food labels.

OzDAFNE Health Professional workshop

The one-day OzDAFNE Health Professional workshop is aimed at health professionals involved in the direct care and support of people with type 1 diabetes.

The workshop covers:

  • The history and evidence base of the OzDAFNE program
  • Insulin dose adjustment using the OzDAFNE principles
  • The OzDAFNE approach to food and carbohydrate counting
  • OzDAFNE hypoglycaemia management
  • OzDAFNE sick day guidelines
  • OzDAFNE and physical activity
  • How to support OzDAFNE graduates in the community
  • How to refer suitable patients to the program
  • The OzDAFNE accreditation and training process for health professionals

The workshop also includes an opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of the OzDAFNE approach with a participant who has completed the program.
