Feltman

Feltman® is a diabetes teaching tool made by the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) and Diabetes Victoria. Feltman is designed to help health professionals explain diabetes in a way that is easy to understand. Feltman can be used with individuals and community groups, as a one-way demonstration or as a two-way interactive workshop.

Feltman is available in two sizes:

  • Large - 2m x 90cm (life size)
  • Small – 140 cm x 40 cm (for appointments, home visits or small groups)

Feltman features:

Printed fabric human body mat with anatomically correct organs: 

  • Stick-on attachments (including insulin keys, locks, glucose discs, ketone discs, fat discs, LDL cholesterol triangles, retinas and kidney cross sections)
  • Stick-on organ labels
  • Prompt cards (including risk factors, symptoms, prevention, complications, management, foods and eyes)
  • USB stick loaded with the Feltman manual and instructional video
  • Storage bag

Feltmum® is a diabetes in pregnancy add-on kit for the Feltman resource developed by Diabetes Victoria and the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO). Feltmum is designed to help health professionals explain diabetes in pregnancy in a way that is easy to understand.

Each Feltmum kit includes:

  • Stick-on printed fabric baby
  • Stick-on fabric wig
  • Stick-on attachments (including pregnancy hormone discs, large glucose discs, large insulin keys and small insulin keys)
  • Prompt cards 
  • USB stick loaded with the Feltmum key messages and instructional video
  • Plastic carry sleeve

The pictorial guides are booklets developed with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) that help explain diabetes information in a culturally tailored and an easy to understand way. The guides have lots of pictures and tips for staying healthy.

Risk Test

The Diabetes Risk Assessment tool has been adapted for the Aboriginal community to help identify people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. People with a score of 12 or higher on the diabetes risk test and are aged 18 years or over are eligible to join the Road to Good Health course

Grapevine is a quarterly newsletter for health workers and others working in the Aboriginal community.

Fighting Diabetes in Your Community

Diabetes Australia has developed information about the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

The materials, including videos, posters and information flyers, explain:

  • The different kinds of support available to people who sign up for the NDSS
  • How the NDSS can help people and communities to live well with diabetes

The Diabetes Story (DVD)

The Diabetes Story (DVD) was made by the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress. It is a moving picture story in three Central Australian Aboriginal languages (Pitjantjatjara, Warlpiri and Arrernte) and English.

The Healthy Tucker Card for reading food and drink labels is a wallet sized card that can be used to compare food and drinks based on the nutrition information on the label.

Rethink Sugary Drinks

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) and Rethink Sugary Drink partnered to highlight the health problems associated with drinking sugary drinks and to encourage the Victorian Aboriginal community to 'rethink' their consumption of sugary drinks.

The website includes facts, tips and videos on sugary drinks.
