OzDAFNE is a comprehensive diabetes education program for adults with type 1 diabetes.

About OzDAFNE

DAFNE stands for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating. We call the program OzDAFNE in Australia.

OzDAFNE takes away a lot of the guesswork involved in managing your diabetes. It gives you more freedom in your lifestyle at the same time as improving your health and your quality of life.

OzDAFNE teaches you how to work out the amount of carbohydrate in your food and the right dose of insulin to take. It also teaches you how to make changes to your insulin doses when you need to, and how to manage hypoglycaemia, illness and exercise.

OzDAFNE programs are run in small groups of 6 to 8 people. OzDAFNE involves group work, sharing and comparing experiences with other adults with type 1 diabetes. OzDAFNE trained diabetes nurse educators and dietitians run each program.

Research shows that people who complete an OzDAFNE program:

  • have fewer severe hypos
  • lower their HbA1c (if it is above target)
  • have less diabetes-related distress
  • are less likely to be admitted to hospital with serious complications from being sick (diabetic ketoacidosis).
