Despite diabetes increasing at a faster rate than other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, research conducted by Diabetes Australia shows people find the numbers hard to believe.Participants in a recent qualitative research study were shocked to learn that approximately 280 people develop diabetes every day and that diabetes will become our number one burden of disease within the next five years.

Developing and building self-management skills that can help children live well with diabetes, centreing on the importance of self-reliance, whilst also providing an opportunity to meet others with type 1 diabetes. This is achieved through, not only the education and supervision from health professionals, but with the presence and positive role modelling of peer support from other children and volunteers with diabetes. Essentially, improving quality of life for children with type 1 diabetes and their families is our mission.

Every year Diabetes Victoria provides places for 275 kids living with type 1 diabetes a chance to go on life-changing camps. These camps provide kids a chance to learn how to independently manage their diabetes in a safe, supportive and above all fun environment. These camps wouldn't have without the generous support of the Diabetes Victoria donors, so the kids on senior camp wanted to send them a special message.

With so much conflicting advice, it can sometimes be hard to know which foods you should eat more of every day – and which to better only eat from time to time. Diabetes Victoria has developed a short 10 minute video clip which will explain the different food groups, recommended portion sizes, healthy cooking methods and sample meal plans. The video is available in English, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic.
