Making healthy food choices, understanding food labels and carbohydrate counting can be a challenge. We organise supermarket tours for parents with children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes, to help make shopping for food easier.

As part of the two hour tour, local dietitians show you how to accurately read and understand food labels, how to calculate carbohydrate from food labels and choose healthy foods that are appropriate for your child with type 1 diabetes. You will also receive a show bag with lots of helpful information and a copy of the Diabetes Australia Healthy Shopping Guide.

Cost: Free for Diabetes Victoria members and $15 for non-members.

2017 dates will be available shortly.

Diabetes Australia Healthy Shopping Guide

Diabetes Australia’s best-selling Healthy Shopping Guide contains more than 1200 examples of suggested food products commonly found on supermarket shelves. It shows you how to read food labels, understand nutrition claims and recognise those that are misleading.

The Healthy Shopping Guide includes a nutrient criteria section relating to more than 28 different food categories making it easier for you to make healthy food choices. Whether or not you have diabetes, this handy pocket-sized guide takes all the hard work out of food shopping.

This booklet normally costs $7.50, however, you will receive a free copy when attending a Diabetes Victoria supermarket tour.

To order a copy of the booklet, please call our Helpline 1300 136 588 or visit the Diabetes Victoria online shop.

Sessions throughout the year cover a wide range of topics relevant to people with type 1 diabetes, they are held in both metropolitan and regional areas.

Teens Empowered to Actively Manage Type 1 Diabetes - TEAM T1 is a 5-day type 1 diabetes education program for teenagers aged 14 – 18 years .

TEAM T1 was adapted for teenagers from  the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) program, which teaches adults with type 1 the skills needed to adjust insulin to suit their lifestyle and what they are eating. It provides teenagers with the skills to calculate how much insulin they need for the foods they are eating, and to manage the day-to-day ups and downs of diabetes more effectively. The program includes:

  • A flexible approach that encourages self-management, problem solving, and building confidence
  • Carbohydrate counting and insulin doses to match meals and snacks
  • Correction doses, managing hypos, sick days and exercise
  • Hands-on learning with a small group of 6-8 teens with type 1 diabetes.
  • Managing at school, going out / parties, alcohol
  • Future health and transition to adult services
  • Communication with parents and health professionals
  • Mental health and resilience
  • Daily discussion of blood glucose results, food estimations and insulin doses.

The course involves active participation, using snack and lunch times to practice carbohydrate counting, calculating insulin doses and managing exercise. Through group discussion and problem solving, participants learn from each other’s’ experiences throughout the week.

Participants receive a course handbook, carbohydrate counting booklet, and blood glucose diary. An activity (such as indoor rock climbing or a game of sport) gives participants the chance to practice managing exercise, have a bit of fun and socialise.

Programs are conducted during school holidays and are led by a TEAM T1-trained diabetes nurse educator and dietitian.

Parents attend a separate 2-day program held in the same week as the teen course.

Recently, the TEAM T1 program featured on WIN News. To view the report and hear what participants have to say, click here.

To register, please phone Lauren Cooper on 03 8648 1866 or email

The TEAM T1 Project is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Chronic Disease Prevention and Service Improvement Fund.

This is a hands-on half-day workshop delivered by our experienced dietitians and is for people with type 1 diabetes aged 18 years and over, who want to improve their carbohydrate counting skills.

Please note: this workshop does not cover insulin adjustment, or the operations and features of insulin pumps and bolus calculators.

DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) is a five-day diabetes education program for adults with type 1 diabetes.

People attend the course in groups of 6 – 8, and together you learn the skills to calculate how much insulin you need for the amount of carbohydrate in the food you want to eat. The program covers carbohydrate counting and adjusting insulin doses, as well as how to manage exercise, illness and hypoglycaemia. DAFNE is thought of as a self-management program as it gives you the tools to look after your own diabetes. It allows you more freedom in your lifestyle at the same time as improving your diabetes control.

Where does DAFNE come from?

DAFNE originated in the UK and is based on a course run in Germany since the 1980s. Results from the thousands of people with type 1 diabetes who completed DAFNE in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Australia show they have better blood glucose control, fewer severe hypos and improved quality of life after attending DAFNE.  They also have fewer days off work and less chance of diabetes complications.

Since courses commenced in Australia in 2005, nearly 4000 people have been trained in DAFNE principles. In Australia we call it OzDAFNE.

What does DAFNE involve?

DAFNE is a five day training course which runs from 9am – 5pm each day.  You can choose to attend a course for five days in a row, from Monday to Friday for one full week. Or, you can attend a course which runs one day per week for five weeks (e.g. five Fridays in a row). Both of these course formats contain all the same information and activities.

The DAFNE course is about learning from experience. During the course you practice the skills of carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustment under the supervision of DAFNE trained nurses and dietitians. Each DAFNE course involves group work, sharing and comparing experiences with other people with type 1 diabetes. After your DAFNE course, there is a structured follow-up program and you will receive ongoing phone and email support from your DAFNE facilitators.

We need to have agreement from your endocrinologist for you to attend DAFNE. Results of your recent blood tests are also needed when you attend a pre-course appointment with the DAFNE facilitator. You will be asked to complete some questionnaires before your course and one year after your course so that we can monitor the effects of DAFNE on your quality of life and overall diabetes control.

Is DAFNE for me?

To participate in DAFNE you need to:

  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Not be on a pump
  • Take one or two injections of long acting insulin each day and quick acting insulin each time you eat
  • Be willing to inject, check and record your blood glucose levels at least four or five times a day
  • Be prepared to adjust your own insulin according to what you eat, your blood glucose levels, and other factors (for example, exercise)
  • Be able to attend all five days of the program from 9 am to 5 pm
  • Be able to speak, understand and read English
Where is the course run?

Diabetes Victoria runs DAFNE courses in Melbourne city and in Geelong. DAFNE courses are also run by other organisations across Victoria, and in most other states in Australia. Please visit the official DAFNE website to see the full list of DAFNE centre locations, or call us on 03 9667 1719 and we can find a centre near you.

Please let us know if you are having financial difficulties and we can talk about other payment options with you. Sharing experiences is a powerful way of learning how to manage diabetes. Meeting other people with diabetes can help reduce the isolation that people may feel and be a source of support when needed. The Diabetes Victoria type 1 peer support groups provide an opportunity for people to access type 1 diabetes specific information and support in their local community. We are committed to identifying the ever evolving needs of people living with type 1 diabetes and facilitating support though the Type 1 Peer Support Group Program.

Some experiences from current support group convenors:

“I’m very glad now that I kept the group going, even when numbers were quite small. The regulars all say that they really look forward to coming along… as do I!” Teresa Pitt – Melbourne Type 1 support group.

“We have kept the meetings fairly informal, allowing people to talk about the things that they have found useful, discuss problems that they may be having. It is a fun opportunity to mix with people that know what you are going through.” Russell Banks – Manningham Type 1 support group.

If you are looking for a support group in your local area, phone the appropriate contact listed below.
