Volunteering at Diabetes Camps Victoria
Diabetes Camps Victoria (DCV) runs a number of overnight camps (1-2 nights) and Day Camps throughout the year for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Some campers may also have other conditions such as coeliac disease, autism, asthma or epilepsy. Camp is staffed by a team of health professionals including diabetes nurse educators, dietitians, medical officers as well as a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.
The following medical staff attend camp:
Role | Description | Required Qualification |
Camp doctor | Participates in activities during the day and is ‘on call’ if needed overnight (a paediatric endocrinologist is also ‘on call’ for the duration of camp). Assists with both general medical concerns and diabetes management. | - Paediatric endocrinologist - Endocrinologist - Paediatric registrar - GP OR nurse practitioner with experience in providing diabetes management care to children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. |
2-3 Lead Diabetes Nurse Educators (DNE) | Coordinate the smooth-running of the camp and support training and supervision to other health professionals. | Registered Nurse (RN) who is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) with experience in providing diabetes management and care to children and adolescents with insulin pump therapy, CGM and Flash GM within their scope of practice. |
Colour Group DNEs | Supervise or administer insulin, administer any extra medication needed and generally oversee the day-to-day diabetes management of campers. | RNs who are CDEs. *Recently graduated DNEs (or student DNEs) are invited to apply as supernumerary DNEs (1-2 per camp) as volunteers. |
Night shift DNEs | Work overnight to ensure camper follow-up is attended to (Junior, & Senior camps). | RNs who are CDEs. |
Wellbeing Coordinator | Present on camp to support all attendees as needed, and have an understanding of issues impacting young people with type 1 diabetes. | - Psychologist - Counsellor - Social worker |
Lead dietitian | Ensures that the camp menu is planned according to appropriate guidelines. The dietitian also provides dietary guidance and support throughout camp along with carbohydrate counting. | APD with experience in providing diabetes management and care to children and adolescents including planning and developing menus and meal plans to meet the dietary requirements for children and young people living with type 1 diabetes, managing special dietary requirements and provide training and supervision to other APDs. |
Dietitian assistants | Assists the lead dietitian in everyday meal planning, carbohydrate counting and preparation. | Must be studying a Master of Dietetics OR completed study. |
All medical staff must hold a Victorian Working with Children (WWC) Check and will have a police check and reference check completed by Diabetes Victoria.

Attendance Payment
Health Professionals are provided with payment to attend camp (unless provided by their employer) and this varies from camp to camp, according the days/nights attended. Supernumerary DNEs and Dietitian Assistants attend as a volunteer and are provided with a nominal Gift Voucher. An ABN number will be required for those eligible for payment -
