Gestational Diabetes project

Gestational diabetes

Health beliefs in the prevention of diabetes and heart disease in women with prior history of gestational diabetes

What is the aim of this study?

  • The aim of this study is to improve the reach and engagement of women who have had gestational diabetes with programs and interventions designed to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • It also forms part of a broader project that compares health beliefs and practices across Western/European, Chinese, and South Asian women.

In order to take part in this study, women must:

  • Have a history of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM);
  • Be born in Australia;
  • Be living in Australia;
  • Within 5 years postpartum;
  • Not currently pregnant;
  • Do not have any cardiometabolic diseases (e.g., type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease).
  • Women with Western/European background

What do you need to do?

  • This study consists of a semi-structured interview and a series of co-design workshops.
  • No onsite visits are required.
  • Participants will take part in a one-hour online interview via Zoom. During the interview, they will be asked to share their beliefs, experiences, and perspectives on postpartum health management and the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Understanding these perspectives will help identify the unique needs of different cultural groups and inform the development of more culturally appropriate prevention strategies.
The findings will support the design of community-based programs that are better tailored to help women reduce their long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
