Reducing risk
Are you at risk?
You cannot change certain risk factors like your age, but you can change some lifestyle risks including
- Being overweight or obese with a large waist size
- Lack of physical activity
- An unhealthy diet
- Smoking
- High blood cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Stress
It is important for everyone to be active every day and eat well, not just those aiming to prevent diabetes. While most of us know the benefits of living a healthy, active lifestyle, many see it as hard work and having to give up lots of good things, when it’s not like that. Involving the entire family in making decisions such as taking steps to set lifestyle goals and working towards making lifestyle changes is an important first step to preventing type 2 diabetes.
It is true that making changes to your lifestyle may mean sacrificing some old habits but with some careful planning and support from programs’ such as our Life! program you can make these changes to be a part of your every day and reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases such as heart disease.
Delivered by dietitians and exercise physiologists, Life! empowers you to make small changes to your daily habits to improve your nutrition, physical activity and stress management. You can choose from a group course or telephone health coaching. Best of all, it’s free

Testimonial
“Life! taught me that I don’t need to go on crazy diets (which don’t work in the long term), but just to eat correctly and more mindfully.
I also learnt that if I do stray from my habits from time to time, that it’s ok, and to just focus on getting back on track.” Linda – Life! participant
