Diabetes Tech Connectivity Update in Australia
Abbott Australasia and Insulet Australia have announced an improvement to the integration of the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and the Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System.
Bringing with it convenience as well as peace of mind, users can now share real-time glucose readings and alerts with loved ones through the LibreLinkUp app.
Closing the Loop on Care
The two devices already communicate, allowing the system to automatically adjust insulin delivery, based on glucose trends.
The missing link for many was the ability for others to see that information. This latest update bridges that gap. By connecting the Omnipod® 5 cloud directly to LibreLinkUp, caregivers can now view:
- Real-time glucose readings and trend arrows.
- Immediate alerts for hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia
- Historical data of up to 12 hours, to better understand daily patterns.
Why This Matters for Australian Families
For parents of paediatric users, this isn't just a product development, it’s a lifestyle development. Parents can have greater peace of mind while their children are away from them, for example,at school, at a friend’s house or playing sport. This update gives parents the ability to keep an eye on things while allowing greater flexibility.
For adults, this connectivity offers greater confidence for those living alone, those who may experience hypo-unawareness or those who have other medical conditions and need additional support. The app allows up to 20 invited followers, meaning help is never more than a notification away.
"We understand how important this feature is for many in the diabetes community – especially caregivers of paediatric users – offering greater visibility, reassurance, and peace of mind.” Joint statement from Abbott and Insulet.
Let the tech talk
By allowing different technologies to talk to one another, Abbott and Insulet are putting the user at the centre of the ecosystem. Now technology can do some of the heavy lifting, allowing Australians with type 1 diabetes to focus less on the numbers and more on living their lives.
