The goal of this study is to explore whether using vibration exercise (a platform at home) for 12 weeks can improve fitness and blood sugar control in people living with type 2 diabetes.
Inclusion criteria for participants
Aged 40–80 years.
Clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (HbA1c ≥5.7%, confirmed with a blood test).
Controlled diabetes through diet or medication (excluding insulin).
Weight ≤180kg.
No history of heart disease.
Not currently participating in a structured and/or supervised physical activity program.
What will being a participant involve?
The following assessments (~4 hours over 2 days) will be conducted at the Deakin University Burwood campus:
Fitness test on a treadmill.
6 minute walk test.
Ultrasound assessment of the chest and thigh.
Blood tests.
Whole body X-ray to determine body composition (fat, muscle and bone mass).
Following these assessments, participants will be provided with a vibration platform to take home and use for 12 weeks (4 times per week). After 6 weeks, participants will return and have their fitness re-assessed. After 12 weeks the above assessments will be repeated. At the conclusion, participants can either keep the platform or return it for a $150 gift voucher.
This project will help us to determine whether vibration exercise should be considered as a way to help people living with type 2 diabetes increase their fitness and blood sugar control.
