Walking Football gives Jim a new community

Just over ten years ago his trusted GP noticed his blood glucose levels were rising, and he warned him about the risk of developing type 2 diabetes down the track.

Jim decided to focus on his diet, had regular blood glucose tests and continued regular exercise. About three years ago, a cycling friend introduced Jim to Walking Football, and he has been part of a Walking Football team ever since.

Walking Football is a modified version of soccer played in a safe, fun, family friendly environment. The rules include no running, no contact and no ball above waist high making, this a great game for all – regardless of age, gender or ability.

It is fantastic for people with many health conditions including Parkinson's Disease, heart conditions, diabetes, stroke and dementia. As the rules have been designed for safety, the game also suits people with certain disabilities.

Over the last three years Jim has played Walking Football each week, after a game of tennis. The team go out for lunch and a chat afterwards.

“I never miss my tennis and walking football games” Jim says.

Jim was not shocked when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few months ago, and says he is grateful he was put on medication later in life.

He worked hard to manage his blood glucose levels through diet and sport and was only recently prescribed type 2 medication.

Walking football has given Jim a new community and he is second in charge of the team now.

“I have made an entirely new community with a diverse mix of people,” he says.

“Some have not played much sport at all and come for regular exercise, while others on the team played soccer when they were younger.

“I have made lots of new friends and enjoy the weekly sessions."

In November, Jim’s Walking Football team participated in the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast. He enjoyed playing with other Walking Football teams from different states across Australia and made new friends.

The Pan Pacific Masters Games is an inclusive sporting event where all participants over thirty years old can qualify. The emphasis is on fun, but the competition can still be fierce.

Jim will continue to play his weekly Walking Football games and is currently investigating other competitions he can sign up for in 2025.
