Diabetes Victoria joins United Energy Around the Bay

There’s a family-friendly ‘Lap the Track’ ride at Albert Park, the 50km and 100km rides, 135km Geelong start, and the classic 220km loop. The event is now in its 32nd year and continues to be one of Victoria’s great traditions.

Liz Pecotic will be leading the team representing Diabetes Victoria. She’s no stranger to a long bike ride – she has cycled in Around the Bay and the Murray to Moyne cycle relay with the HypoActive team annually for more than a decade.

“My first Around the Bay was in 2012 before I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and I have entered ever since,” she says.

“The reason I ride is so I can eat cake! That hasn’t changed even with type 1.

“Around the Bay is the perfect motivator to keep moving the whole year, not just the 12 weeks before the big day.

“Riding helps with lowering blood glucose levels, but it’s also great for clearing your head, you see so much more than when you’re walking or running!”

Liz says when she was diagnosed with type 1, she was determined to keep riding her bike and to participate in Around the Bay every year.

“I feel lucky to partner with HypoActive and Diabetes Victoria for this year’s event,” she says.

“I would be participating in Around the Bay anyway, so it’s special to raise funds for a cause close to my heart.

“It’s a fun day – I enjoy riding over the bridge and the ferry is cool too.”

She adds that the event is not only for elite riders and encourages people living with all types of diabetes and their families to represent Diabetes Victoria.

“Anyone is welcome to train with us ahead of the big day in October.

“If you live with diabetes, always carry hypo treatments and check your blood glucose levels regularly, but you can still ride!”
