Diabetes Victoria welcomes $14.6million landmark investment in diabetes research

The funding, delivered through the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund and announced by Minister for Health Mark Butler, will support ACADI over four years.

Diabetes Victoria, the state's peak body dedicated to reducing the impact of diabetes on people, families, communities and health systems, recently established a 10-year collaboration and funding agreement with ACADI.

Founded in 2022, ACADI quickly established itself as a critical force in diabetes research. Today’s announcement is a clear signal that diabetes research is urgent, and this is being recognised at the highest levels.

Diabetes Victoria CEO Glen Noonan said the announcement affirmed what the organisation had long known. We established a 10-year partnership with ACADI because we saw the real-world impact of their research. Today’s announcement validates that commitment, and we could not be prouder of this partnership.

“For the 1.5 million Australians living with diabetes, research isn’t theoretical, it’s life changing. This investment brings us closer to the treatments and breakthroughs our community has been waiting for.”

"At the end of the day, this is about people. People checking their blood glucose, managing their medication, reducing complications, wondering if things will change. This funding means researchers can keep working on the answers people deserve. That’s what this partnership is about.”

ACADI Director, Professor Elif Ekinci, has welcomed the announcement. “This significant re-investment into ACADI’s future will help us to continue to build on our work to date and further translate our research into real-world outcomes and advancements for everyone living with diabetes, not just in Australia but globally.”

Diabetes Victoria looks forward to continuing its partnership with ACADI and to seeing the impact of this research reach the people who need it most.
